Amazing things happen when good men realize that God is the reason for their success. And sharing your Christian faith doesn’t always come easy, especially when you are on live television.
It started with the Super Bowl prayer breakfast when Benjamin Watson, who played with New England Patriots in 2004 and laid down his team’s win at the feet of God’s providence. While the Patriots won the game that year, Benjamin Watson was out with an injury, and said he didn’t feel like he deserved the credit. Yet, over time, he came to understand that God gave him grace in an unusual way.
He compared the team’s win to what Christ did on the cross for all of us. Benjamin Watson did nothing to receive that Super Bowl ring, except be a team member fighting for his health and yet, he felt like he did not deserve it. Yet, he was given credit for something he had not physically earned. While he admits his own struggle to accept this, he paralleled it with what Jesus did on the cross.
Then, Peyton Manning from the Denver Broncos stated after Sunday’s Super Bowl win for the Broncos that the team owed their win to “The Big Man upstairs” and that He was the One who gave them this victory.
True pain and grit gives us a chance to realize the blessings we have, and the outright mercy God lavished on us as His children. Whether it is in playing a game or walking through life’s challenging circumstances, we either come to Christ genuinely, or we grow deeper in Him.
We can share our Christian faith because:
God is Judge and we are redeemed. REAL men and women of God are the ones who sincerely flatten themselves in front of a mighty and merciful God, and receive His grace. They are the ones who have committed a million sins, but repent each time. They are redeemed, but are also:
Healed gossips and idolaters
Restored from verbally, emotionally, and/or abusing others
Former addicts and alcoholics
Most all were abused children
Sometimes unintentionally abusive, but truly repentant
Divorced, sometimes multiple times.
Formerly immoral idolaters
Rescued from lawlessness
Delivered from fornication and adultery and even homosexuality
Former prostitutes and pimps
Their clothes are now white and pure before the Lord because their hearts are truly changed.
Jesus brings justice with His white horse.
He saves the called and chosen, no matter what their past is. It is those living in morality through the power of Jesus Christ who will find true justice.
He redeems His children from the oppressor, because they realize that they are not God and need His wisdom. True justice comes when God comes to rescue His children in spite of people’s politically correctness through His Holy Spirit.
In spite of judgment. In spite of ISIS. In spite of discrimination in our country.
And right now, in this season in our country, we need justice.
We may fall short in the world’s ideas of what the perfect life is, and the perfect idea of success is, but the Lord says, The first shall be last and the last shall be first. It isn’t about competing with one another for the best list of service in our church, community or country, but it is about the true and genuine redemption of our hearts. All of us.
No one gets a free ride unless they lay their hearts before the only One who brings true forgiveness.
How many people do you think will be saved and redeemed because the name of the Almighty was referred to on Sunday night? Only God knows. Yet, more people will know who we are as Christians, and what we are about because a Few Good Men stepped out to share their faith in practical ways.
I pray that we all have the faith to step out and share our Christian faith in ways that honor Him.
Until next time~Kim
